We both swiped right on Tinder. After a few messages, we scheduled a coffee date for April 27, 2014 four years to the day before the wedding. We went on a few dates and felt an immediate connection.  In fact, the connection was a little too good. Worried that things were getting a little too serious, Amy stopped returning Shawn's calls and we fell out of contact for about a month.

In June, Shawn was traveling for work and a waiter at a steakhouse in Oakland recommended a whiskey called Campfire. It was bottled by the High West Distillery out of Shawn's home state of Utah, so he couldn't say no. After a few glasses of whiskey (and a few more of wine), Shawn was full of liquid courage, enough to swallow his pride and reach out to Amy again. Amy was excited to hear from him and we reconnected, for good this time.

How We Met

The Proposal

Shawn had a court hearing San Diego a Friday in August 2015 and invited Amy to come along and make a weekend out of it. On Saturday, we signed up to go on a group sail of San Diego Bay at sunset. What Amy didn’t know is that there was no group sail that day. Shawn had chartered the boat and hired a private captain, Manny, to take the two of us for our own private tour. Manny put on a wonderful show, feigning anger that the other couples had flaked and didn’t show up. We set sail and found a little cove to drop anchor and watch the sunset. Amy had been feeling a little seasick, and Shawn was worried that his elaborately schemed proposal might end very differently than he had planned. But Manny came to the rescue with his own personal cure for seasickness – Fritos. One bag of corn chips later, Amy was feeling fine again. Shawn was able to pop the question as the sun was setting, and Amy said yes.
